Nuclear Chemistry Nuclear science is the study of sub-atomic particles and their function in various subjects. A nucleon is the collective name for the two components of the atomic nucleus: the neutron and the proton. Isotopes are any of the different forms of an element each having different mass numbers, which give the total number of nucleons. The major fundamentals of nuclear chemistry include radioactive decay, the nature of fission and fusion, and mass defect. The decomposition of the nucleus is referred to as radioactive decay. During radioactive decay, an unstable nucleus spontaneously decomposes to form a different nucleus, giving off radiation in the form of atomic particles or high energy rays in an attempt to reach a more stable arrangement of its protons and neutrons .This decay occurs at a constant rate that is referred to as half-life. The stable nuclides exist in the zone of stability. A radionuclide that decays to another nuclide which may be either radioact...

Nuclear Chemistry

When a really large unstable isotope changes into to smaller isotopes that are 2 completely different elements. the nucleus has to be larger than 230(mass). They are really slow and spontaneous. Fission = splitting. Can create a chain reaction. (picture above). Critical mass= must be enough mass in a reaction or enough fission type mass, fissionable mass, for the reaction to continue to go on.(minimum amount). Sub critical mass= mass of fission material that doesn’t have enough to keep the reaction going. Super critical mass= so much mass that there is to much where this rate of fission react...

Nuclear Chemistry: The Good vs. the Ugly The definition for nuclear chemistry is the application of chemical techniques to the solution of problems in nuclear physics. This includes the discovery of naturally occurring and synthetic radioactive elements and the results of nuclear fission. There are both pros and cons in nuclear chemistry. People believe that nuclear chemistry is bad for the environment but there are a lot of great things that can come out of this. Things like medical uses, food and even in your own home! A pro for having nuclear chemistry are smoke protectors which c...
